This grab is intended for use in soft sediment. When the grab touches the bottom, the trigger is pulled using a messenger and the grab closes, collecting the sample. During retrieval, the grab remains closed and the two upper covers prevent the sample being washed. It keeps the Ekman grab open and attaches it to the main line.Two thin hinging flaps are open while the grab is lowered.
The spring loaded flaps close when a drop-weight is dropped (cable operated) or a button is pressed (rod operated). Samples can, therefore, also be taken from very soft top layers. The pressure of the sample prevents much loss of material. Nevertheless, please note that small stones or stalks may prevent the grab from closing properly.
